The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is conducting an open house meeting on a proposal to construct sidewalks on the north side of East Helena near public schools. All sidewalk will comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

The open house will be held in East Helena from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 11, at the East Valley Middle School (401 Kalispell Avenue North). The public is invited to visit project displays, ask questions and provide comments on the project. Project team members will be available during the open house to discuss the project.

Proposed work includes construction of ADA-compliant concrete sidewalk. The purpose of the project is to connect Eastgate School with East Valley Middle School and provide continuous sidewalk for students from Radley Elementary School to travel south on North Montana Avenue sidewalk.

The project consists of two segments:

• Segment 1 begins at the intersection of East Lewis Street and Lake Helena Drive near Eastgate School and extends west for approximately 2,600 feet on the north side of East Lewis Street, ending near East Valley Middle School at the intersection of East Lewis Street and Oak Avenue (Reference Post [RP] 0.49 to RP 0.00).

• Segment 2 involves realignment of the crossing of North Helena Avenue from Radley Elementary School. The sidewalk begins at the intersection of East King Street and North Helena Avenue and extends east on the south sided of East King Street to the intersection of East King Street and Montana Avenue (RP 0.33 to RP 0.40). The sidewalk then extends south on the west side of Montana Avenue from the intersection of East King Street and Montana Avenue until it meets existing sidewalk in the alley between East King Street and East Clinton Street (RP 3.71 to RP 3.67). Total length of sidewalk for segment 2 is approximately 600 feet.

Construction is tentatively planned for 2020 depending on completion of design and availability of funds. Minor utility relocation and no new right-of-way are anticipated.

Community participation is an important part of the process, and the public is encouraged to attend. MDT attempts to provide accommodations for any known disability that may interfere with a person’s participation in any department service, program or activity.
