Journeys to the Land of Gold: Emigrant Diaries from the Bozeman Trail, 1863-1866
By Susan Doyle. Hardcover, 2 volume set, 858 pages, maps, photos.
The Bozeman Trail was the West's last great overland emigrant trail. Susan Badger Doyle spent ten years scouring archives and private collections for stories of emigrants who traveled it. Included in these two volumes are 33 firsthand accounts from 1863 through 1866, when the trail was closed by "Red Cloud's War." The documents are also thoroughly annotated and illustrated with historical photographs and detailed maps of the trail.
